many have tried and has not been able to take a 3D desktop interface to an operating system not 2D, but that certainly has not prevented others trying to. The latest to cut example comes courtesy of none other than Microsoft, who recently received a patent for what they described as a "method and apparatus to provide a gallery of three-dimensional task team interface". In other words, it is an interface that is intended to help you better manage multiple tasks, what the patent suggests that it could take place in an environment 3D with a floor, walls and a roof. Apparently, would be able to group multiple Windows in several places in the "room", which would allow it to rely on its spatial memory to easily find a specific task - with the room to get more and more deeply to accommodate more tasks. In the claims of the patent, the only means for moving around the room is a set of icons that are adjusted to accommodate the 3D environment, although it certainly seems that it could be easily adapted to accommodate gesture controls. Hit up the link origin for many more designs where it comes from.
